Introduction to Our Parks

Our parks and recreational facilities are here to serve the community's needs. Over the years we have taken great pride in our continued efforts to maintain and upgrade our parks to provide the most favorable environment for many types of recreational activities. From picnics to hiking our trails...and from swingsets to basketball to horse shoes...our parks are considered "top notch" in all respects!

Our Mission Statement

The Mission of the Avon-Washington Township Parks & Recreation Department is to provide individuals and their families quality recreation in an excellent environment. To protect, maintain, and wisely use the natural and recreational resources available for the benefit of the community and it's visitors.

Our History

Opened in 1989, the Washington Township Community Park provides a wealth of facilities for township residents. Purchased with the assistance of a $250,000 grant from the LWCF (Land, Water and Conservation Fund), we currently maintain 73.5 acres. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people visit the park on an annual basis.

We also have one of the last remaining Iron Whipple Truss Bridges in Indiana, circa 1876. It spans White Lick Creek and many people are not aware, but the road that passes over the bridge was originally named "Indianapolis Road" because it linked the County seat in Danville with Indianapolis. We refer to it as the "Horse and Buggy U.S. 36".

The last know vehicular traffic to pass over the bridge was a Fire Engine in 1972, when the previous owner's house burnt to the ground. In 1999, the bridge deck was replaced and side rails were recreated and installed for added protection for pedestrian traffic.

We are looking forward to recreating the decorative art work as well as paint the bridge to fully restore it to it's original luster!
